Deep-root watering a tree in Colorado during warm dry winter conditions

Protecting Your Trees and Landscapes During Colorado's Warm, Dry Winter

What the warm, dry conditions mean for your trees and shrubs, and the proactive steps you can take to prevent long-term damage.

As we get into an early spring, homeowners and property managers are asking about trees, plant health, and the latest moisture report -- here's what you need to know.

The last 90 days have been unusually warm and dry across the Front Range. Fort Collins recorded 43 days above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, while Denver International Airport saw only 17.7 inches of snowfall -- well below average. Combined with the region's low mountain snowpack (currently at 61% of average), these conditions have put added stress on trees, shrubs, and landscapes throughout Colorado.

Denver Water Stage 1 Drought

In response to these dry conditions, Denver Water has declared Stage 1 Drought, calling for a 20% reduction in water use effective immediately. While automatic irrigation systems do not need to be turned on until mid-to-late May, it is important to take steps to protect your landscapes now. For more details on the drought declaration and what it means for your property, read our Stage 1 Drought guide.

Recent Weather and Drought Conditions

  • March precipitation: On March 15, the Metro area received 2 to 3 inches of snow, and the Palmer Divide received 3 to 5 inches. While helpful, this does not make up for the extended dry period.
  • Wind and fire risks: A March 12 windstorm caused power outages for 27,000 residents and highlighted the increased fire risk during dry, windy conditions. Learn more in our fire mitigation guide.
  • Drought status: About 64% of the state is experiencing drought conditions. Stage 1 watering restrictions are in effect in some areas, and more cities are expected to implement limits soon.

Impacts on Tree and Plant Health

Prolonged dry periods and unseasonably warm temperatures can cause:

  • Root stress, limiting nutrient and water uptake
  • Leaf and canopy damage
  • Increased vulnerability to pests and disease

Steps to Protect Your Landscape

JLS Landscape & Sprinkler Inc. recommends proactive care to help your trees and landscapes come through this dry period in the best condition possible.

  1. Deep-root watering: Delivers water directly to the root zone, supporting root health and reducing surface evaporation. Our team provides professional deep-root watering for trees and shrubs across the Denver Metro area.
  2. Irrigation audits: Confirm that your system schedules comply with current city restrictions and that every zone is operating efficiently. Schedule an irrigation audit before your system activates this spring.
  3. Heat stress monitoring: Watch for wilting, premature leaf drop, or leaf browning -- early signs that your plants need attention.
  4. Arbor Kelp treatments: Arbor Kelp is a seaweed-based biostimulant that improves stress tolerance, strengthens root systems, and helps trees and shrubs recover from drought conditions.

Planning for a Resilient Landscape

Looking ahead, there are several steps property owners can take to build a landscape that withstands Colorado's increasingly variable climate:

  • Planting drought-tolerant or native species that require less supplemental water
  • Scheduling regular deep-root watering before peak summer temperatures arrive
  • Monitoring landscape health throughout the season to catch problems early and prevent long-term damage

Our landscape maintenance programs include seasonal health assessments and proactive care plans tailored to your property's specific needs.
